Super human level machine intelligence?
This will be the explosion, the ‘technological singularity’, as it is commonly referred to, the point at which technology will advance at unthinkable speeds (literally) because concepts and models and being proved by the greatest minds on earth, minds of pure logic, super human intelligence in post human minds. Musk, Gates, Vinge and others agree this will happen before 2030.
Vemor Vinge explains in his 1993 NASA sponsored symposium ‘How to survive in the post human era’, that his research and simulations point to a ‘technological singularity’ occurring between 2005 and 2030. Incidentally, Bill Gates and Elon Musk (among many others) agree with Vinge that this will happen, and soon, but Gates disagrees with Musk’s quote that “AI is a fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization”.
Vinge explains the term ‘technological singularity’ thusly:
“The acceleration of technological progress has been the central feature of this century. We are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on Earth. The precise cause of this change is the imminent creation by technology of entities with greater-than-human intelligence.”
The ramifications of this explosive moment and the progress or changes to matters such as the economy, sustainability, ethics or humanity itself are incredibly difficult to convey. The thought that geniuses and experts predict it to happen in the next 10 years is staggering.
